Work Safe BC-Approved Traffic Control Person Training

The official Traffic Control Person (TCP) course is a 2-day, Work Safe BC-approved training program managed by the BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA).

First-time participants are required to complete the full 2-day in-person course. Eligible TCP renewals may complete a 1-day renewal course.

Course Structure

Day 1

  • In-person classroom theory
  • Introduction to temporary traffic control
  • Traffic control procedures, equipment, and responsibilities
  • Worksite and roadway safety principles

Day 2

  • Review of theory
  • Written knowledge examination
  • Outdoor practical training
  • Practical skills evaluation

Certification Requirements

To successfully complete the course, participants must achieve:

  • Minimum 80% on the written knowledge examination
  • 100% on the practical evaluation

Upon successful completion, TCP certification is valid for 3 years.

Mandatory Requirements

Participants must bring:

  • Valid government-issued photo identification
  • CSA-approved steel-toe safety boots with a minimum 6-inch ankle height for Day 2 practical training

Participants who do not have the required safety footwear may not be permitted to participate in the practical portion of the course.

Course Description

Participants will learn the procedures involved in planning, setting up, monitoring, maintaining, and evaluating temporary traffic control systems.
The course emphasises safe and organised traffic management to help protect workers, motorists, pedestrians, and other road users.
Students will develop an understanding of temporary traffic control operations and learn how to safely and effectively manage traffic flow through active work zones.

Non-Refundable Fees
All course fees are non-refundable once payment has been processed.

Late Arrivals
Participants arriving late may not be permitted to attend due to mandatory attendance and certification requirements.

Missed Classes
Missed classes are not eligible for refunds or rescheduling.

No-Shows
Students who register but do not attend the course without providing prior notice will be considered no-shows.

No-shows are not eligible for:

  • Transfers
  • Rescheduling

Illness or Inability to Attend

If a participant is unable to attend due to illness or another unexpected circumstance, Hilltop AST must be notified at least 72 hours before the scheduled course start time.

Failure to provide adequate notice may result in the loss of the full course fee.
